Roman Translucent Emerald-Green Glass Unguentarium

Roman Empire, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. This large, free-blown, translucent rich dark green glass vessel has a slightly concave base with a rough pontil, a squat piriform body that tapers to a pinched neck base, a wide tubular neck with a narrow mouth, a flat flared rim and a rolled lip. The yellow iridescence displays brilliant and fiery highlights of red, violet, and gold shades underneath; a fantastic complement to the rich verdant tones of the glass itself. Size: 2.125" W x 3.75" H (5.4 cm x 9.5 cm); 5.125" H (13.02 cm) while on stand.

Provenance: private Florida, USA collection, acquired 1970s in Paris, France
