A wonderful Roman marble relief plaque depicting a gladiatorial scene, c. 2nd Century AD, involving a armed and armors gladiator who readies himself for a lion who emerges from a shingled enclosure while a handler attempts to keep the animal at bay with a rod or stick. The scene is very well-detailed with good style and light surface deposits. 8 x 6 in (20.3 x 15.2 cm). Displayed on a custom wood and metal stand. Ex Australian private collection.
