Romano-British Bronze Staff Finial w/ Eagle Head
Roman, Great Britain, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A beautifully preserved, cast-bronze staff finial of a columnar form bearing the majestic head of an eagle on top. The raptorial head presents with petite eyes beneath plateaued brows, incised feathers across the neck and back, and a narrow perforation within the meant to retain a small flag. Beneath the eagle head is a seven-sided socketing shaft with a narrow pinhole just above the bottom flange as well as a protruding, upturned swan head. Size: 0.9" W x 2.5" H (2.3 cm x 6.4 cm)
