Romano-Egyptian Painted Wood Panel - Standing Figure

Egypt, Romano-Egyptian Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A hand-carved wooden door for a personal shrine or reliquary box with a flat body bearing a pair of hinge plugs on the top and bottom of one side. The front features a white ground upon which black pigment forms a standing togate priest figure wearing a knee-length toga and holding a ceremonial hes vase. Above his tapered neck and ovoid head is a broad flower with eight petals that is perhaps representative of the sun. Doors like this example typically display intricate geometric motifs or important religious figures; this figure may perhaps be of similar significance. Size: 5.3" W x 9.2" H (13.5 cm x 23.4 cm)

Condition Report: Minor nicks and abrasions to front, hinge plugs, peripheries, and verso, with light fading to original pigment, and slight warping to overall form, otherwise intact and very good. Nice remains of original pigment and patina throughout.
