Romano-Egyptian Terracotta Figure of Baubo (Trickster)

Egypt, Romano-Egyptian period, ca. 30 BCE to 2nd century CE. A mold-formed terracotta figurine of Baubo, the elderly Greek trickster goddess of humor as well as maintaining and protecting the fertility of the land. Baubo presents nude while seated with outstretched legs, her left arm holding one leg aloft and her right hand placed just above her genitalia, and globular breasts drape down above her portly abdomen. Her feminine visage exhibits petite ovoid eyes, a flush nose above thin lips, and a backswept coiffure. Size: 1.91" W x 1.54" H (4.9 cm x 3.9 cm); 2.75" H (7 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: Whisnant Gallery, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA acquired prior to 2000
