Ronald Reagan

Draft ALS signed “R. R.,” one page both sides, 8.5 x 11, July 21, 1966. Draft of a form letter concerning his position on California's Redwood Forests, in full: "My position with regard to the Redwoods has been deliberately distorted by at least one major newspaper. It is true that I am opposed to the Nat. park plans. It is not true that I lack concern for the preservation of these magnificent trees. I favor the Redwood Park & Recreation plan as the best proposal for saving the bulk of the remaining virgin groves of big trees, and the timber industry so important to the economy of our 4 Redwood counties. Under this plan 115,000 acres of the best of timberland will be opened to the public for recreation. I think it should be noted that the Federal government now owns 12,000 acres of big trees in one county and is lumbering this land under the forest service. If there was danger of wiping out this national beauty, the government could stop cutting on its own land. I appreciate your giving me this chance to comment, and I assure you I would not stand by and see this great asset dissipated." A typed transcription of the letter on Reagan's Pacific Palisades stationery, headed "Redwood Forests Sample," is stapled to the front. In fine condition. Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from PSA/DNA.
