Ronald William Fordham Searle (1920-2011), Sequence One: Scene Two
Ronald William Fordham Searle (British, 1920-2011) Sequence One: Scene Two Ink on paper 6 x 24 inches (15.2 x 61.0 cm) (image) Artist's stamp lower right While we have been unable to discern the exact usage of this work, the characters in this example stylistically best fits Bill Melendez's animated film Dick Deadeye, or Duty Done (1975). This animated musical comedy was inspired by the comic operas of Gilbert and Sullivan, including H.M.S. Pinafore and The Pirates of Penzance. Ronald Searle designed the film's eccentric Victorian characters, translating his wiry linework and sharp caricature into animation. His exaggerated figures perfectly complement the production's theatrical humor, musical energy, and affectionate satire of British society.
