FRANKLIN ROOSEVELT LEASES AN OFFICE ON BEHALF OF THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY.

Upon the inauguration of President Woodrow Wilson in 1913, New York state senator Franklin Delano Roosevelt was appointed Assistant Secretary of the Navy in gratitude for his support during the 1912 presidential campaign. At first Roosevelt considered the position a stepping stone to better things, however the outbreak of hostilities in Europe in 1914 led him to refocus his energies on the Navy. Following the sinking of the Lusitania in May 1915 Roosevelt helped to establish the Council of National Defense and following America's entry into the war two years later oversaw the construction of naval installations in Europe. In later years Roosevelt would continue to advocate for a strong Navy, and during the Second World War the Navy he helped to establish would prove key to the Allied victory.
