Rosenthal Studio-Line Artist Cup No. 17 Lino Sabattini
This sculptural artist cup with matching saucer in white porcelain is a design by the Italian designer Lino Sabattini for the Rosenthal Studio-Line. The set is characterised by a modernist, asymmetrical design. The cup features a deep, rounded bowl with an integrated, flat-formed handle that slots into a corresponding, raised fold on the saucer. The saucer itself has an irregular, non-circular contour, specifically designed to accommodate the base of the cup. The decoration consists of a transfer-printed pattern with fine, parallel blue lines running in curved bands across the white porcelain surfaces. A blue facsimile signature of the designer is also located on the exterior of the cup.
The undersides of both pieces feature a black base mark. The mark shows a crown above a crossed leaf or stem motif and the Rosenthal lettering. Below this, ‘studio-linie’ as well as ‘GERMANY’ can be read. This is followed by the text ‘Künstlertasse Nr. 17’ and ‘Lino Sabattini’. A blue facsimile signature is printed over the lower part of each mark. Additionally, small numbers such as 11 and 27 are impressed into the glaze on the underside.
