Roy De Forest was an American painter and sculptor known for colorful, imaginative scenes populated by dogs, people, and fantastical creatures. Born in North Platte, Nebraska, he studied art in San Francisco and became an influential member of Northern California’s art community. His densely patterned compositions combine humor, personal symbolism, and dreamlike storytelling, inviting viewers to invent their own narratives. Dogs, drawn from his lifelong affection for animals, became a recurring presence in his work. De Forest taught at the University of California, Davis, from 1965 to 1992, helping shape its celebrated art department alongside artists including Wayne Thiebaud and Robert Arneson.
