Catalogue Note:
This charming pearl-set locket brooch was presented as a gift from Queen Victoria on the occasion of the birth of her goddaughter Lady Victoria Marjorie Harriet Manners (1883-1946), later the Marchioness of Anglesey, on 20 December 1883.
Lady Victoria, eldest daughter of Henry Manners, 8th Duke of Rutland and Violet, Duchess of Rutland, was an avid art critic, writer and illustrator. She was like her mother, a talented amateur artist too, some of her drawings feature in this sale as part of lot 75. Among her most famous publications are the first in-depth studies on Johan Joseph Zoffany, published in 1920, and on Angelica Kauffman four years later, both of which she co-authored with the art historian George Charles Williamson. In 1912, Lady Victoria married Charles Paget, 6th Marquess of Anglesey, with whom she had six children.
