Rudolf of Habsburg and Stefania of Belgium—a commemorative card marking the engagement and wedding of the heir to the throne, published by O. Kramer, Vienna, [1880–1881].
Card measuring 10.6 x 6.6 cm (business card size) with a chromolithographic, gilded frame, featuring two photographic portraits, published by Oscar Kramer in Vienna.
The frame features roses and forget-me-nots, royal crowns, and a red ribbon; the panels contain portraits of Archduchess Stefania in a light-colored dress with flowers in her hair and Archduke Rudolf in uniform with order stars. On the reverse, a decorative purple print featuring the coat of arms: “Kais. König. Oesterr. Ung. und König. Bayer. Hofkunsthandlung für Photographie von Oscar Kramer Wien Graben No. 7” and later annotations in pencil. Good condition; gilding slightly worn.
Rudolf Habsburg (1858–1889) married Stephanie of Belgium (1864–1945), daughter of King Leopold II, on May 10, 1881, in Vienna. The marriage, which produced their only daughter, Elisabeth Maria, was unhappy. After her husband’s death, Stephanie married Hungarian Count Elemér Lónyay in 1900. In late June and early July 1887, the couple visited Galicia, including Kraków and Lviv. The card is a typical commemorative item sold on the occasion of their engagement (1880) and wedding (1881).
O. Kramer—Imperial-Royal Austro-Hungarian and Royal Bavarian Court Dealer in Photographic Art in Vienna (Graben 7)—was one of the leading publishers of portraits of court members and prominent figures.
