Russian Alexandre Rodchenko Avant-Garde Watercolor Painting

Attributed to Russian Avant-Garde artist Alexandre Mikhailovich Rodchenko ( 1891-1956 ).Alexander Rodchenko was born in St. Petersburg, Russia on November 23, 1891. In the turbulent years after the Russian Revolution, Rodchenko devoted his energies to painting, industrial and graphic design. He shared a studio in Moscow with his wife, artist Varvara Stepanova. Their apartment was large by Moscow standards, having two bedrooms and a parlor in addition to the studio; nothing has changed significantly since 1935. It is the home of three generations of the Rodchenko family and the studio is also a shrine to Alexander and Varvara Stepanova Rodchenko, their life and work. The couple moved to the apartment in 1922. Rodchenko was then the leader of the Constructivist Group within Inkhuk, the Institute of Artistic Culture founded in 1920 with help from Kandinsky. Determined to free art from its bourgeois associations, he even abandoned the Constructivist technique in painting and sculpture for which he is still best known. The couple threw themselves into activities designed to revolutionize the aesthetics of the new Communist order. It may have been these joint activities that saved the couple from Stalin's terror. During the German invasion (1941-43) the family was evacuated to the Urals. By the time they returned to Moscow, most of the people they had worked with had disappeared. Though they were supporters of the Bolshevik revolution, neither of them had ever been party members. Under Stalin, they returned to painting.
