Russian School (Late 19th/Early), Portrait of Tsar Alexis Feodorovich

[ translate ]

Russian School (19th century) Portrait of Tsar Alexis Mikhailovich (Russian, 1629-1676) Oil on canvas 36 x 30 inches (91.4 x 76.2 cm) Initialed on the reverse: J.L. Pinxit PROVENANCE: Prince and Princess Nikita Nikitich Romanoff; Princess Maria Romanoff. "Boyar" portraits of the seventeenth century are relatively rare, but there was a fashion for them in Russia in periods of the 18th and 19th centuries in which they were painted by artists for churches, institutions, and private collectors. Many of these portraits were based on famous sources, and this image of Tsar Alexis may be traced to a painting of about 1680, by an unknown Russian artist from the "Armory School" of the Moscow Kremlin, and now in the State Historical Museum, Moscow (inv. 55384 II-3462). There are also a group of engravings by Christian Albrecht Wortmann (1680-1760) which depicted the Tsar Alexis in coronation attire. The offered work may date to round 1800, but the Latin initialed signature is enigmatic. As brothers, Prince Nikita and Prince Alexander Romanoff were very close. Their wives, Janet and Maria, were also good friends, and avid collectors of Romanoff materials from dealers and at auction. They both also became caretakers of their husbands' and father-in-law's paintings and works of art. The offered lot, a portrait of Tsar Alexis Mikhailovich "The Mild" belonged first to Prince Nikita and his wife, Princess Janet (née Schonwald), but after the death of both Prince Nikita and his son Prince Feodor in 2007, Princess Janet presented this portrait of Peter the Great's father to her sister-in-law as a parting gift when she moved to Cairo.
