The New York industrial designer Marc Thorpe conceived this object as a protest against the disappearance of the original banks from the New York underground. De Vries, whose daring work can be described as post-graffiti art, made the sofa 'a kind of surprise that will slowly reveal itself and take shape with use. ' He first colored the sofa by machine and then covered the result with a black layer. Only through wear will the underlying colors become visible. 'The bank is coming to life, and impermanence plays an important role in this,' says De Vries. 'And because you can scratch into the sofa, it harks back to my graffiti roots.
