"My quest, through the magic of light and shadow, is to isolate, to simplify and to give emphasis to form with the greatest clarity. To indicate the ideal proportion, to reveal sculptural mass and the dominating spirit is my goal." -Ruth Bernhard

Although Bernhard began her career as a commercial photographer, it was a chance meeting with Edward Weston that convinced her of the creative possibilities of the photographic medium. Her fine use of light and shadow, along with her close-up perspective of the contours of the female nude, resulted in images charged with erotic power and emotional depth. Her formal precision produced works of breathtaking radiance and resonance that have fixed her place as one of the greatest photographers of the nude form.
