Rutherford Hayes Full Sig Clipped From Military Order of the Loyal Legion Doc
Signature
A clipped signature belonging to Rutherford Hayes (1822-1893), former 19th U.S. President, signed as "Rutherford B. Hayes." A partial date, from 1888. N.p. The signature was clipped from a partly printed and partly manuscript document related to the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States (MOLLUS), a fraternal organization of Civil War Union officer veterans first established in the Spring of 1865. Hayes has signed here in his capacity as Senior Vice Commander in Chief of MOLLUS. Toning, with adhesive traces and isolated discoloration, else very good. Trimmed to an overall size of 4.375" x 3.125". Comes with the former collector's research printouts, including from Hayes's personal diary. From The Doug Wertman Collection.
Hayes had enlisted in the 23rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry in the Spring of 1861. He fought in the Second Battle of Bull Run, as well as the Battles of South Mountain, Buffington Island, Second Kernstown, Berryville, Opequon Creek, and Cedar Creek. By the end of the Civil War, Hayes had been wounded four times, and been promoted to brevet major general.
As a Union officer veteran, Hayes claimed membership to the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States, the first and oldest Civil War veterans' organization in the nation. Hayes - along with four other U.S. Presidents (Grant, Arthur, Harrison, McKinley), as well as a roster of other famous Union officers (Sherman, Sheridan, Schofield, McClellan, Custer, Farragut, Hancock, etc.) - were among MOLLUS's most respected early members. Hayes had been serving as Senior Vice Commander in Chief of MOLLUS when he was nominated and unanimously voted in as Commander in Chief at the fraternity's Philadelphia headquarters in mid-October 1888.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
