Philadelphia: Mitchell, 1846. First Edition. 22 1/2 x 21 inches visible, 33 1/2 x 32 inches framed. This is the first edition of Mitchell's seminal pocket map of Texas and the West issued at a time of great political upheaval and anticipated emigration. The text Accompaniment is considered one of the best sources about the region at this critical time. While the focus of the map is on the newly added state of Texas, the large area labeled "Upper or New California" is in limbo with large areas undetailed and described as unexplored. In Oregon, many interesting land claims are noted and the map also depicts, and the text describes, the Missouri, Iowa and Indian Territories which border the subject areas. On the map is printed an "Emigrant Route from Missouri to Oregon" and the text presents a highly favorable view of emigration to Texas.
