Third Quarter of the 19th Century
Lid with American flags, an arch of stars, a rising sun and flower-filled urns on plinths surrounding a shield emblazoned with three birds and topped with a fourth bird. Front with "CRA", floral medallions and three arrows piercing the mother-of-pearl shield-shaped escutcheon. One side with a star flanked by altars. Other side with an American-flagged steamboat between two hillside villages populated with houses, a church, a lighthouse, a fort-like building and trees. Rear with a seascape showing houses and a lighthouse on a hill, an American-flagged ship and a large bird. Barber's pole and geometric borders. Most of the inlay in figured woods except a wing on each of the birds on the lid and two of the arrows on the front are metal and one of the arrows is bone. Lid hinges open to reveal an adjustable mirror fitted with a bone or shell knob.
