C'est par ces mots que Robert Descharnes décrit, dans Dalí, The hard and the soft, spells for the magic of form, le processus de création du groupe de sculptures dont est issue la présente œuvre : « En tant qu'ami du couple, je pouvais rester aux côtés de Dalí et discuter sans cesse pendant que ses mains créaient les pièces de la collection. Pour cette œuvre, en tant que sculpteur, Dalí adopte un rituel : une heure précise de la journée, hors de son atelier, et si possible sous le soleil. Ainsi, chaque après-midi, après la mi-journée, Dalí pose son pinceau et quitte l'atelier pour la piscine. Là, confortablement installé dans le creux d'un énorme fauteuil poire, Dalí façonnait et modelait jusqu'à ce qu'il soit temps de rejoindre Gala pour un déjeuner de poisson grillé » (R. & N. La présente œuvre fait partie d'une série de 44 pièces coulées par la fonderie Diejasa sur une période de dix ans, dans les années 1970-1980. Connue sous le nom de Collection Clot, du nom d'Isidro Clot qui dirigeait la fonderie avec son gendre Adrian Campos, les 4 éditions de la série sont les seuls moulages autorisés du vivant de Salvador Dalí.
Façonnée dans la cire adoucie par le soleil au bord de la piscine de Dalí à Port Lligat, au nord-est de l'Espagne, Dios solar emergiendo de Okinawa a été créé par l'artiste pour la Foire internationale de la mer au Japon. L'œuvre est un hommage aux vies humaines perdues lors des violents combats qui eurent lieu sur l'île d'Okinawa pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Émergeant de l'eau avec énergie et intensité, cette personnification du soleil levant est un symbole d'espoir et représente une nouvelle aube pour l'homme.

Robert Descharnes, in his book The Hard and the Soft, Spells for the Magic of Form, describes Dalí's process of creating the group of sculptures from which the present work issues: 'As a friend of the couple I could stay at Dalí's side chatting non-stop while his hands created the pieces of the collection. For this work as a sculptor, Dalí adopted a ritual: a precise hour of the day outside his atelier, if possible, under the sun. And so, each afternoon, past midday, Dalí put down his brush and left the atelier for the swimming pool. There comfortably installed in the depression of an enormous bean bag, Dalí shaped and modelled until it was time to join Gala for a lunch of grilled fish' (R. & N. Descharnes, Dalí, The Hard and The Soft, Spells for the Magic of Form, Sculptures & Objects, Paris, 2003, p. 159).
The present work is one component of a series of 44 works cast by the Diejasa Foundry over a ten-year period in the 1970s-1980s. Known as the Clot Collection, after Isidro Clot who ran the foundry with his son-in-law Adrian Campos, the 4 editions of the series are the only authorised life-time casts by Salvador Dalí.
Moulded with sun-softened wax by the poolside of Dali's North-Eastern Spanish retreat in Port Lligat, Dios solar emergiendo de Okinawa was created by the artist for the International Fair of the Sea in Japan. It is a monument and homage to the great sacrifice and loss of life of both sides seen during the vicious fighting on the island of Okinawa during the Second World War. The figure emerges from the water with great energy and, like the rising sun, it is a symbol of hope and represents a new dawn for man.

Condition Report: One or two small losses to the patina on the extremities of the headdress and hair. Light surface dirt throughout with dust to the crevices. Minor rubbing to the extremities.Subject to the foregoing it is our opinion that the work appears to be in generally very good condition.
