SAMORODOK - RUSSIAN SILVER and GOLD LARGE CIGARETTE CASE with EMERALD, 19th CENTURY
This is an antique Russian silver and gold cigarette case featuring textured relief designs throughout. It opens with an emerald cabochon button, revealing two storage compartments. Reticulation was a technique used by many pre-revolution era Russian silversmiths, including Faberge.
HALLMARKS: '84' for silver content, kokoshnik and 'FABERGE' in Cyrillic with Imperial Warrant.

HISTORY of SALES: A few years ago, Russian silver cigarette cases made in samorodok technique were sold on Live Auctioneers, Sotheby's and Christie's for $6,030 (14 years ago), $8,125 (12 years ago), $8,850 (5 years ago), and $9,250 (16 years ago) - please refer to the screenshots for details. Today, prices have significantly increased compared to those of 5-10 years ago.
WARRANTY: The buyer has 5 days to inspect items for originality, valued at up to $5,000, and 10 days for items valued at $5,000 or more. Items can be returned to the seller for a refund; please refer to the Terms for more details.
NO RESERVE: Most of the auctioned items have NO reserve price. Among the remaining items, there are reserve prices set at incredibly low levels, typically ranging from 30-40% of the low estimate price.
PAYMENT: For this particular item, please use Wire transfer, Zelle, Certified Check, or Money Order as methods of payment. You can also suggest other methods of payment. Canadian winners can make payments to a Canadian Bank in CAD via Check, Money Order, Wire Transfer, or Interac e-Transfer.

SAMORODOK: In metalwork, reticulation refers to a decorative surface finishing technique involving the application of localised heat to the surface of a metal object. Reticulation is typically performed on alloys of silver and copper or of gold and copper. Reticulation exploits the difference between the melting temperature of an unalloyed metal and that of an alloy of the metal; by depleting the base metal content in the surface layer, a piece can be heated in such a manner so as to render the interior of the piece molten while leaving the surface of the piece intact. The reticulated surface is formed by the thermal expansion and contraction of the interior metal which is effected by deliberate variation in the application of localised heat. In the late 19th century, reticulation was used as a decorative technique by Russian goldsmiths such as FABERGE, where the process was referred to as samorodok (lit. "born by itself").
