SAMUEL FINLEY MORSE BADGER (MA, 1873-1919)

Ship's Portrait of the Four-Mast Schooner "Inez N. Carver", port-side view, passing the Boston Light outbound, oil on canvas, signed lower left, in the original gold cove and gesso frame, OS: 28 1/2" x 42 1/2", SS: 21 1/2" x 35 1/2". Fine craquelure. Includes summer of 1909 Logbook of Captain Kneeland, along with two photos of Uncle (Capt.) Fred Hodgkins, an early cabinet photo and a later (circa 1910) mounted photo of the Capt. at the helm of the "Lamiel". He was the original Master of the "Inez N. Carver".
From a long line of Carver, Dow and Nickels ship captains, the marriage of Amos Dow Carver and Inez, the adopted daughter of Jonathan Clifford Nickels, brought together two prominent Searsport families. The schooner "Inez N. Carver", built in Bath in 1901, was partly owned by Carver and was named in homage to his wife.
