Condition Report:
The following condition report has been provided by Karen Thomas of Thomas Art Conservation LLC., 336 West 37th Street, Suite 830, New York, NY 10018, 212-564-4024, info@thomasartconservation.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.

This painting is in good condition overall. In the flesh passages, retouching appears to be limited to a few tiny dents and to small touches of restoration, mostly at the edges, while visually obtrusive cracks have been lightly suppressed with retouching. In the Madonna's dress and in the inside of her mantle, age-related fading in the shadows has been addressed with restoration. The blue mantle has darkened over time — a common aging phenomenon — and some degree of toning may have been applied to this passage. Retouching in the blue applied to address wear along the craquelure is darker and more opaque than its surroundings, but this is only noticeable under strong light. Loss around the perimeter of the image area suggests the frame may have been altered, as do scored-in cracks crossing from the image plane onto the molding on the right side. The varnish is clear and even. The vertically grained wood panel support displays a mild lateral warp. This painting may be enjoyed in its current state.

"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues.
