SAUL. C. J. WOODWARD: A PORTRAIT OF LORD SALISBURY, PRIME MINISTER OF ENGLAND signed and dated Lord Salisbury: Prime Minister of England/ The above sketch is composed of his speech at Newport Oct. 8. 1885, at the Guildhall London November 9th 1885, and a full biographical sketch of his career containing in all 26,842 words in shorthand and 19,326 words in longhand by Saul. C. J. Woodward/8 Corn Market/Derby/25.10.86 Pen and ink on paper 40 x 27 cm (16 x 11in) Lord Salisbury (1830-1903), one of the longest serving Prime Ministers was elected three times over two decades and held office for a total of 14 years (1885-1892). This portrait was completed only four months into his unforeseen first tenure as Prime Minister, following the death of his predecessor William Gladstone. Lord Salisbury unusually combined the role of Prime Minister with that of Foreign Secretary and focused mainly on his efforts abroad, most notably forming the colony of Rhodesia (present day Zimbabwe).
