SAXON SILVERED CROSS
9th-10th century. Silvered bronze, 7/8" high. Swelled beams with pointed tip globular terminals. The cross beam centered with a swell at the beam intersection. Silver restored and mounted on a modern sterling silver chain. Saxons were late to accept Christianity and did so only after their defeat by Charlemagne in the early 9th century. It's possible that these crosses were worn as an indication of that acceptance and by extension, submission to Carolingian rule.
