SCHMIDT, CARL E.
A Western Trip. [Detroit: Herald Press]: "for private circulation only", [circa 1904]. Presentation inscription from the author, Christmas, 1904, on free front endpaper. Publisher's brown russia gilt blocked with a Western design. 8 3/4 x 6 1/4 inches (22.5 x 16 cm); 91, [1] pp., 12 mounted full-page photochromes after photographs by William Henry Jackson and 18 smaller mounted original gelatin silver prints. Spine and covers somewhat worn, silk endpapers detached but present, the frontispiece image unmounted and creased at the lower corners, some offsetting.

Schmidt was a wealthy Detroit tanner, whose father had also been in the tanning business, though Schmidt started a very successful independent tannery. He was also active in Detroit politics. This work recounts his journey to Yellowstone Park and Utah with his daughter Emma and two friends, Frank and Everett Pingree (Pingree had an involvement with Utah mining). The photochromes are by the Detroit Publishing Company, from negatives by William Henry Jackson; the smaller images are by members of Schmidt's party. The leather for the binding was done at Schmidt's tannery, but has not held up terribly well. In addition to Yellowstone account, Schmidt describes his visit to Salt Lake City. He closes with a lively description of the Ophir Mine at Stateline in southwestern Utah, with accounts of gunfights, gamblers and various and sundry colorful characters.
