SCHMIED (François-Louis) - KIPLING (Rudyard). Kim.
Lausanne: Gonin et Cie, [1930]. - 3 volumes in-4 including one of original drawings, 306 x 246. Green morocco for the two volumes of text and white morocco for the volume of drawings, the first plate of volumes I and II is decorated with a composition in relief in a large rectangular recessed compartment with a golden background decorated with small strips of green morocco for one and green and brown morocco for the other, these compositions represent on the first volume a large fawn morocco bull with ivory box horns, and on the second volume a white morocco horse ; the volume of drawings is decorated, in hollow on the first plate, with a painted and mosaic composition representing a nocturnal landscape; smooth spines, framing of green morocco and a fawn and white morocco scroll inside the first two volumes, and of white morocco and a blue morocco scroll inside the volume of drawings, lining and endpapers of beige and ivory silk, gilt edges on witnesses for the volumes of texts and palladium for the other volume, covers and spines preserved, spine folder and strips with green morocco overlap, slipcase (Creuzevault).
THE MOST VALUABLE COPY OF THIS BOOK.
It is indeed the complete original layout, thus justified by the publisher to the justification, including the 57 original gouaches by François-Louis SCHMIED (1873-1941), mounted or bound at their location in a copy of the book printed on japan. There is a frontispiece, 14 drawings out of text, 15 chapter headings, 15 letterheads, 11 culs-de-lampe and a colophon vignette. Only the banners and chapter headings are signed. At the end of the first volume there is a leaflet with drawings of 3 unrestrained culs-de-lampets.
A third volume contains the 15 original gouaches of the Suite for Kim, all signed by Schmied and complete with the printed folder. This suite, mounted on tabs, is justified and signed in ink by Schmied on the first page. An original unpublished gouache by the artist has been added, illustrating a sentence from the book: "Whoever goes to the mountains goes to his mother", dedicated by Schmied to Gaston Gradis.
ASTONISHING AND PRECIOUS CREUZEVAULT BINDINGS, EACH WITH A DIFFERENT DECORATION IN HOLLOW AND RELIEF.
It is the resumption of 3 illustrations of the book, namely the bull appearing in frontispiece in the first volume, the white stallion according to plate 6 in the same volume, and "The river under the stars" according to gouache XV of the Suite for Kim. A
unique and most precious set, bringing together 75 original gouaches by one of the major artists of the Art Deco period and offering 3 original bindings by Creuzevault, among the most beautiful he ever made.
Perfectly preserved copy. The shirts and cases appear to have been remade.
