SCHOENBERG ARNOLD: (1874-1951)
SCHOENBERG ARNOLD: (1874-1951) Austrian-born American modernist composer, music theorist, and teacher. An interesting T.L.S., Arnold Schoenberg, one page, 4to, North Rockingham Avenue, Los Angeles, California, 30th August 1950, to Kenneth Lindsay. Schoenberg states that he possibly exchanged three or four letters with Wassily Kandinsky, explaining ´Our first contact occurred in 1910 (?) or 11, through a letter which Kandinsky wrote me on account of a concert of my works in Munich. He has sent me copies of his paintings, whereupon I also sent him photos of some of my paintings. At the same time I left Vienna for good, met Kandinsky in München, & became friends with him. In 1914 we spent the summer months on the Staffelsee near Munich, where Kandinsky lived. When the war broke out, Kandinsky left for Russia, and I have at least for the next 8 or 10 years not heard from him. It is possible that in about 1922 we exchanged some letters´. Schoenberg adds that it would be difficult for him to find the letters (´Probably they are well preserved in cases which are difficult to reach´) and also writes ´I did not know of Kandinsky´s translation of this section of my Harmonielehre, about parallel 5th and 8ves. He must have done this before we met. This section was published in musical magazine, probably in 1910´. In concluding the composer asks ´Has Kandinsky preserved some of my letters? If so I would like to know the contents before you publish them´. A letter of good content. One watercolour 'stain' on the upper left margin only very slightly affects the text, adding an almost abstract artistic element that is arguably apt given the subject matter of the letter About VG
Dr. Kenneth C. Lindsay (1919–2009) American art historian and scholar dedicated to the study of Wassily Kandinsky . His foundational doctoral dissertation and lifelong research fundamentally transformed the art world's understanding of early abstract modern art.
Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) Russian painter, one of the pioneers of abstraction in western art.
