SCHOOL OF BENJAMIN WEST
Benjamin West was a major American artist, born on October 10, 1738, in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania. The first American artist to study in Italy, West embraced Neoclassicism. Later in Great Britain, he would be known for his historical, religious, and mythological subjects, which had a profound influence on the development of historical painting in Britain and the United States. Though, West never got back to the United States, he left a following of painters (such as Washington Allston, Gilbert Stuart, Charles Willson Peale, and John Singleton Copley) who represented his training and counsel through the nineteenth century.
