Description:

SCHOOLCRAFT, HENRY R.[OWE]
Narrative Of An Expedition Through The Upper Mississippi To Itasca Lake, The Actual Source Of The River, Embracing An Exploratory Trip Through The St. Croix And Burntwood (Or Broule) Rivers in 1832. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1834. First edition. Original purple-brown publisher's cloth, retaining the paper spine label. 8 3/4 x 5 1/2 inches (22 x 14 cm); 307 pp., five maps (of which two are folding). The cloth faded on the spine, the boards a bit spotted and soiled, moderate foxing internally, as usual, the maps generally clean and untorn. The Sheldon Museum copy (with their stamp on the endpaper, but no other markings), with several earlier ownership indications.
Schoolcraft conducted several expeditions; the present one discovered the true source of the Mississippi. There are rich observations on the native American population of the region, and a substantial Chippewa vocabulary and grammar. The frontispiece map shows the lake country in Minnesota; the Mississippi emerges from the north of Itasca Lake. Howes S187; Graff 3698; Field 1367 etc.

C Property of a Massachusetts Gentleman
Estimate $700-1,000
