SCOTTISH HIGHLAND SGIAN DUBH KNIFE SET 19TH C.
Mid 19th Century knife set with scabbard. Etched woven pattern onto bog wooden handles, with black leather covered scabbard. Primary knife is edged with deep fuller and jimping sawback edge to spine. Miniature knife and fork are both included and fit into black leather scabbard and are also decoratively carved with woven pattern and studded. Decoratively etched hilt, ricasso and pommel. With monogrammed initials onto the front of the scabbard at the primary knife's throat. Primary Knife's throat is marked with the visible frontal etching of a family crest (depicting a blade wielding arm) above the marking " D.M.SA & 1842 ". Above the familial crest that appears to be the crest of the MacNiel clan, is the Gaelic motto "buaidh no bas", which translates from Scottish Gaelic as "to conquer or die", or "victory or death. Other silver fittings decorated with engravings that depict wreath & thistle. Pommel bears Scottish thistle in relief. Fixed fastening loop on rear of throat.
