SCRIMSHAW WHALE'S TOOTH WITH SAILOR ON SHORE Mid-19th Century

Scene of a sailor holding a large American flag and waving his hat at two ships setting sail wraps around the circumference of the tooth. The distant ship flies a long pennant from the central mast and an American flag off the stern. The near ship, probably a brigantine, flies an agent's flag from the aft mast and an American flag off the stern. The sailor is wearing traditional attire and his flag is billowing in the wind. A floral garland encircles the tip. Mounted in a silver base. Height 5".

Condition: Age crack on edge, extending from base of tooth approx. 1.75".
