SEATED BRAHMA STONE KASHMIR 12TH CENTURY
Dimensions: Height 13 cm Wide 8 cm Depth 3,5 cm Weight: 554 grams
A small stone image of Brahma seated cross-legged upon a lotus pedestal beneath a pointed shrine-like niche. Three faces are visible, with the principal head flanked by subsidiary faces at the shoulders, referring to the creator god's canonical four-headed form. The broad torso, rounded abdomen and compact modelling give the figure a concentrated sculptural presence.
Brahma's multiple faces express his all-encompassing vision and association with the four directions. Although comparatively rare as an independent focus of worship, he occupies a fundamental place in Hindu cosmology as the creator within the classical triad with Vishnu and Shiva.
Weathering has softened the facial features and some attributes, yet the lotus seat, multiple heads and architectural framing remain legible.
