SEATED BRONZE GANESHA INDIA 1950'S
Dimensions: Height 12 cm Wide 9 cm Depth 7 cm
Weight: 1757 grams
A substantial bronze image of Ganesha seated frontally on a tiered, ornamented base. The elephant-headed god wears a high crown and elaborate jewellery, with his rounded belly framed by four raised arms. His trunk sweeps across the chest, giving the composition a strong diagonal accent, while small attributes and finely worked borders reward closer inspection. The dark, polished bronze has warm highlights on the face, hands and ornament, with traces of green oxidation in the recesses.
Ganesha is invoked at the beginning of undertakings as the remover of obstacles and is also associated with learning, prosperity and good fortune. His distinctive elephant head makes the deity instantly recognisable, while the many attributes and gestures connect even small household images to an extensive tradition of Hindu iconography.
This casting has an unexpectedly monumental presence for its size, combining compact mass with exceptionally busy surface detail.
