Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th/early 20th century
Boldly decorated in enamels and gilt with a matching design, each face painted with a different scene, three depicting chrysanthemums, peonies and hollyhock, the fourth panel with a Chinese-style landscape showing a cascading waterfall and pavilions set on steep mountains, the shoulder of both vases with a repeated foliate pattern on a blue ground, the base of each vase signed Satsumayaki Senzan. Each vase: 31cm (12 1/8in) high. (2).
