Two Figures Reclining (Porgy and Bess), circa 1935
oil on tin
overall dimensions of plate: 25.5 x 32 cm (10 x 12 5/8 in.)

Acquired from the above in the 1970s
Sotheby's, New York, 22 April 2009, lot 35 (one of a pair)
Acquired at the above by the present owner

LOT NOTES
The present work most likely depicts a scene from George Gershwin's opera Porgy and Bess. Soudeikine was responsible for the set designs for several of its productions in New York and Boston in 1935. The piece comes from the estate of Murray Hoffman, an architect and artist who was a close friend of Sergei Soudeikine. Soudeikine spent some summers at Murray Hoffman's barn in Woodstock, as well as collaborated with him on various projects such as the William Breed Mansion in Manhattan.

CONDITION
Unframed, the work appears in age-appropriate condition. Craquelure resulting in a loss to the right and left edge. Scattered losses to the perimeter of the tin. Surface soiling resulting in discoloration to the lower left edge. All consistent with age. Inspection under UV shows a layer of varnish but no apparent sign of restoration.
unframed

N.B. All lots are sold in as-is condition at the time of sale. Please note that any condition statement regarding works of art is given as a courtesy to our clients in order to assist them in assessing the condition. The report is a genuine opinion held by Shapiro Auctions and should not be treated as a statement of fact. The absence of a condition report or a photograph does not preclude the absence of defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of any others.
