SEVEN CHINESE LACQUERED WOOD FIGURES Ming Dynasty and later 明或後期 漆木人物雕像七件 Comprising a set of three gilt-painted figures depicting the God of Weather and two attendants, a gilt-lacquered general wearing moulded armour, a pair of temple guardians, and a figure of Zhang Tianshi wearing green and yellow-painted robes and inscribed to the back, 14 - 21cm high (7) - PROVENANCE: The God of Weather and attendant figures were previously in the collection of Oleg P. Peresypkin, a long-term Ukrainian resident of Shanghai and later Hong Kong; Later inherited by Augustus Fletcher (1928-2020), thence by descent [see image of receipt]. From 1948 to 1958 Gus Fletcher served in the Colonial Police in Malaya, and latterly was Assistant Superintendent of Police and Area Special Branch Officer in the Kuala Pilau and Bahau Police Districts of Negri Sembilan. He was awarded the George Medal in 1957 after a combined police and military operation code-named “Googly” during the Malayan Emergency.
