Of the numerous rabbinic works published by the Chida, the Shem Hagedolim is extraordinary in its unique presentation of information on almost 2200 rabbinical personalities and their published and manuscripts works. Much of this information was gathered during the Chida’s travels as Shadar – Rabbinical emissary raising funds for the poor of the Holy Land, in the course of which he saw many important and rare manuscripts and printed works that would otherwise have been unknown to him.
