SHIP'S QUARTERBOARD OF THE SCHOONER "LEONORA" WRECKED
Carved and Painted Wood Quarterboard in black and yellow, 7" x 71", weathered. The Three-Mast Schooner "Leonora", formerly the whaling brig "Leonora" of New Bedford, built 1871. She was 458 tons, owned by Gilbert Transportation Company of Mystic, Conn. Registered in New London, Conn. She departed Round Top, Maine Dec 2, 1907, with a load of fish scrap, bound for Charleston, S.C. Seven man crew with W.H. Gilchrest as Master. Grounded in squall on Cape Hatteras when her pumps failed on the 9th, broke up on the 10th. Attempted rescue by Hatteras and Cape Hill Life Saving Squads, only seaman Harry Steab and cook Rudolph Almeda survived.
