SIGNED ALEXANDER MCGILVRAY, HARRISONBURG, SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA KENTUCKY-STYLE LONG RIFLE, full stock, rifled octagonal barrel with seven grooves, approximately .42 caliber, double set trigger, percussion, top of barrel stamped "A. McGILVRAY", lockplate partially marked "WARRANTED", period ramrod. Alexander McGilvray (1798 - abt. 1858), Harrisonburg, VA (active c. 1820-1854). First half 19th century. 49 3/4" LOA, 34 5/8" L barrel.
Very good condition overall, expected wear, percussion nipple replaced, small filled loss to stock behind hammer, some denting and wear to backplate, barrel tang slightly out of place and possibly repaired, etc.

Catalogue Note: Alexander McGilvray was a long established and prolific Harrisonburg, VA gunsmith. His shop was located in close proximity to silversmith/clockmaker Peter Heneberger. The 1850 Federal Census recorded two additional gunsmiths working with McGilvray, his 18-year old son Tazewell and a 21-year old from Germany named Philip Sherman.
