SIME'S "MILITARY GUIDE FOR YOUNG OFFICERS," 1776.

Thomas Simes. "The Military Guide for Young Officers, Containing a System of the Art of War;.." London: J. Millan, 1776. Second English edition. Octavo. [1]-363, [1], [176] [with] "Military, Historical, and Explanatory Dictionary." Four folding maps at the rear, another twenty plans and many tables in text, numerous wood engravings in the Dictionary section. Recent leather spine with gilt title and banding and original calf boards. A fine copy, bearing the inscribed name "Bateman" (Lieutenant Richard Bateman, 20th Foot, 1777-1783) on the title page. An important and popular British manual in the field libraries of numerous American officers, including General George Washington. Simes included copies of numerous official documents and regulations in his compilation, including the "1768 Warrant" prescribing the uniforms of the British Army" and the 1764 Manual Exercise. An unauthorized American edition of this work was published in Philadelphia later that year. CONDITION: original leather boards, with new leather spine with gilt decorations and lettering, contents complete, good and fairly bright. JLK
