KILLADOON HOUSE, PROPERTY FROM AN IMPORTANT IRISH ESTATE

SIR THOMAS LAWRENCE, P.R.A.
Bristol 1769 - 1830 London
PORTRAIT OF LADY EMILY CAULFIELD (1808-29)

oil on canvas, laid on panel, oval
50.2 x 37 cm.; 19¾ x 14½ in.

Condition Report:
The canvas has become partially detached from the board backing and has an undulating surface as a consequence. A stain on the left-hand side of the canvas suggests that it may once have suffered water damage. Pin-prick losses are scattered throughout the sitter's hair and to a lesser degree around her face. The paint surface is dirty and the painting appears to be unvarnished or otherwise very matte. Inspection under ultraviolet light does not appear to reveal any retouchings.

Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Delivered by Lawrence's executor to Francis Caulfeild, 2nd Earl of Charlemont (1775-1863), in 1832.
