SIR WILLIAM ORPEN, R.W.S., N.E.A.C., R.A., R.H.A. | PORTRAIT OF MR. FRANCIS HENRY EDWARD LIVESAY
SIR WILLIAM ORPEN, R.W.S., N.E.A.C., R.A., R.H.A.
1878-1931
PORTRAIT OF MR. FRANCIS HENRY EDWARD LIVESAY
signed u.l.: ORPEN
oil on canvas
112 by 86.5cm., 44 by 34in.
Condition Report:
The following condition report has been prepared by Hamish Dewar, Fine Art Conservation:
UNCONDITIONAL AND WITHOUT PREJUDICE
Structural Condition
The canvas is unlined and is evenly and securely stretched onto a keyed wooden stretcher and
has a canvas-maker's stamp on the reverse. It is obviously most encouraging to find the
canvas in it's original unlined state and the structural condition would appear to be very good
and secure.
Paint surface
The paint surface has an even varnish layer. Inspection under ultraviolet light shows small
scattered retouchings including a very thin line on the sitter's forehead with a small spot above
his nose, a repair in the curtain behind the sitter in the upper left of the composition and other
very small spots and lines of inpainting, all of which are of minimal size.
Summary
The painting would therefore appear to be in very good and stable condition and no further work is required.
FRAME
Held in an impressive Bologna style frame, probably late 16th century.
