SITTING BULL SIGNED PHOTO (The Finest in Existence)

A Unique and extremely rare signed image of the great warrior and Sioux chief Sitting Bull. This cabinet card photo is a Portrait of Sitting Bull and his family 1883. Portrait shows Sitting Bull and his family wearing traditional regalia. Sitting Bull's mother, Her Holy Door sits on his right, wives Four Robes and Seen-By-The-Nation stand behind him, and his oldest daughter, Many Horses and her son sit on his left. Sitting Bull holds a pipe and pipe bag on is lap. To say Sitting Bull signed photos are rare is an understatement, there have been but a handful to have ever shown in the market in the last 50 years. What makes this photo especially important is it is also signed in front and in ink, which we can not find another example.

He was chief of the Dakota Sioux, who were driven from their reservation in the Black Hills by miners in 1876, and took up arms against the whites and friendly Indians, refusing to be transported to the Indian Territory. In June, 1876, they defeated and massacred Gen. George A. Custer's advance party of Gen. Alfred H. Terry's column, which was sent against them, on Little Big Horn River. They were pursued northward by General Terr. Signed in period ink below image 'Sitting Bull". The signature and photo also comes with a certificate of authenticity by University Archives as well as ours.

This came from the estate of Mr. Joseph Epes Brown (September 9, 1920 – September 19, 2000), who had it since the 60’s. Brown was an American scholar whose lifelong dedication to Native American traditions helped to bring the study of American Indian religious traditions into higher education. His seminal work was a book entitled, The Sacred Pipe, an account of his discussions with the Lakota holy man, Black Elk, regarding the religious rites of his people.
