Mounted with two related manuscript fragments, one signed by Routh and Ogden. Adams County, MS, 7 April 1841 An exceptionally large administrators' sale of the estate of Thomas G. Ellis (1805-1838) of Elliston Plantation near Natchez. 170 of his enslaved people are named, and 21 of the women are offered with an unnamed child, presumably infants. A few of them are given descriptive names, including Big Jesse and Little Jesse, Old Jenny, and "Harry (dark)." A twisted patriotic streak is suggested by the names America, Washington, and George Washington. Many are listed with surnames other than Ellis, suggesting that they were acquired from other masters. The livestock and farming equipment of the plantation was on the block as well.
