(SLAVERY & ABOLITION.) One Hundred Dollars Reward!! Ran Away . . . a Yellow Man Named Jim Carr. Letterpress broadside, 9½ x 7¾ inches, signed in type by the owners Bissell & Schlatre, with docketing on verso; folds, wrinkling, unevenly trimmed, minor foxing and edge wear. Plaquemine, LA, 26 October 1847 "One Hundred Dollars Reward!! Ran away . . . a yellow man named Jim Carr, 5 feet, 10 or 11 inches high, about 28 years of age, will weigh 175 lbs. Jim is a Carpenter by trade, has a bushy head of hair, is a good looking fellow, generally smiles when spoken to." His previous two owners, both in Missouri, are named. The owners Frederick N. Bissell (circa 1805-1868) and Sebastien Urbain Dutton Schlatre (1819-1864) were partners in the Planters' Hotel in Plaquemine from 1842 onward. Bissell was also a steamship captain. Jim Carr escaped from their possession on 2 July 1847, and variations on this ad ran in the New Orleans Times-Picayune from at least 10 September to 6 October. This broadside was issued nearly 3 months after his departure. No other examples traced in OCLC or at auction.
