SMIK OTTO: (1922-1944) Czechoslovak fighter ace of World War II who became the highest scoring Slovak fighter ace in the RAF. Killed in Action when shot down over the Netherlands. Rare fountain pen ink signature ('Smik P/O') on a small, slim oblong 12mo piece, evidently clipped from a document, accompanied by two slightly larger pieces of typed narrative removed from the same document, a combat report, and stating, in part, 'On June 17th I was Blue 1 in the Caen - Bayeux area at 4000 feet. At approximately 19.00 hours control reported 30 plus ME 109 approaching at 10,000 feet. I started to climb and saw 2 FW 190 ..I turned my section cross-sun, climbed to 12,000 feet and attacked I opened fire from 150 yards on the rear one with a five second burst of cannon and machine gun I observed hits throughout the burst covering whole aircraft, pieces breaking away. At the end of the burst the E[nemy]/A[ircraft] fell to pieces in mid-air and crashed ..I then barrel rolled to reduce speed and came between E/A and Blue 2 who was approx. 150 yards behind. I opened fire from 80 yards dead astern with machine gun (cannon stoppages) and hits were scored on all starboard side of fuselage, cockpit and engine. Thick black and white smoke came from it and small pieces flew off. I last saw the E/A falling down out of control ..I claim the first FW 190 destroyed ..' Autographs of Smik are rare in any form as a result of his death at the age of 22. Two file holes to the largest portion of the document, only very slightly affecting the text and with a small tear and minor area of paper loss, otherwise VG, 3 The text relates to Smik's fifth confirmed aerial victory on 17th June 1944.
