A Korean Muniseok granite figure, portrayed as an official wearing a loose robe and holding his Hol. Joseon Dynasty 1392–1910. H. 203 cm.

These stone statues were erected in front of tombs of royals and other dignitaries to protect them and their descendants from evil spirits and other misfortunes. Thus the figures do not represent the owners of the graves but function as their protectors. The Muninseok statue depict a confucian official holding his hol, an item held by courtiers when granted royal audience, while the smaller Dongjaseok statue depict a child attendant.

Wear due tu age. Especially at face. Hat broken and restored.
