The origins of the American Saturn rockets, including the Saturn V rocket that brought man to the Moon in July 1969, actually begins in the final days of World War II, when the US supreme command in the ruins of The Third Reich rounded up ca. 1,600 German scientists and technicians - known as Operation Paperclip - who subsequently were taken to America. Here the advanced skills of the Germans were used in numerous ways, not least within the field of rocket science. A dominant role was given to the aristocrat Wernher von Braun (1912–1977), father of the Saturn Program and the man once in charge of Hitler's V-1 and V-2 rockets during the world war years.
