SOUTH ARABIAN INSCRIBED STONE STELE

Ca. 1st millennium BC. A stone block fragment with incised characters in Ancient South Arabian script to the top edge and below are two standing figures with simplified features. During the first millennium BC, this part of the ancient world saw several different kingdoms; Qataban, Saba (Sheba), and Himyar, emerge that had built their wealth upon desert trade and in particular frankincense and myrrh. Size: L:130mm / W:130mm ; 2.26kg Provenance: Property of a West London gentleman; previously in a collection formed on the UK/International art market in the 1980s.
